Institute Presentation

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Debrecen (UNIDEB) was the first campus medical school of Central Europe. It contains 25 clinical departments specializing in various fields. The current number of students is up to 3455. The institute started MD training in English in 1987. The current number of students in the English Programme exceeds 1500. Besides educating medical students, it also coordinates the B.Sc. in Medical Diagnostics and M.Sc. programs in Clinical Laboratory Research and Molecular Biology and Nutrition. The aim of the Faculty of Medicine is to be a training centre in which education and research meet the high standards of the profession. For the sake of this cause, it is constantly increasing its knowledge in the field of new disciplines.

Owing to these efforts, the Hepatology Clinical Research Group operates successfully and efficiently within the Department of Gastroenterology in the Institute of Internal Medicine. The Research Group has been involved in a widespread national and international professional network. The group is participating in the National Registry Network Program of Institute of Translational Medicine, organised by the University of Pécs, and operates the DELIVER-IT and AMBER Registries for patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis and autoimmune liver diseases. Moreover, it is participating in the Stay Alive Programme. The group is an accredited centre of the EASL / EF CLIF consortium since 2016, and a National Associate Centre of European Reference Network for Rare Liver Disease since 2019. The Hepatology Clinical Research Group also closely collaborates with R&D departments of several industrial companies (Generic Assays, Werfen Group-Inova Diagnostics Inc., Medipan, Euroimmun, etc.). Close collaboration furthermore exist with the Institute of Laboratory Medicine, Division of Immunology (University of Debrecen, Faculty of Medicine), led by the Co-Principal Investigator, Peter Antal-Szalmas MD, PhD, DSc, because the institute is equipped with cutting edge research infrastructure and techniques. The core interests of the Hepatology Research Group are:

• Chronic Liver Failure and Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure
• Bacterial infections in liver cirrhosis
• Gut Barrier Failure and Bacterial Translocation

The group has, for example, been involved in the field of immunology research dealing mainly with prognostic and pathogenetic significance of different IgA antibodies in liver diseases, and various GI diseases associated with significant bacterial translocations.
